The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be spending their first Christmas as “free spirits” in their new home in California with their little boy, Archie, who is nearly 18 months old.

This marks the second year Prince Harry (36) and Meghan Markle (39) have not joined the annual royal gathering at Her Majesty’s country estate.

Last December, of course, they were holed up in Canada ahead of the great Megxit move that sent shockwaves through The Firm and the UK. They’re believed to have spent Christmas with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, who visited them from Los Angeles.

According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the Sussexes are excited for their first American Christmas in Meghan’s native California. She adds the couple will instead fly to the UK a few days later ahead of Meghan’s high court case against UK publication The Mail on Sunday, which starts on 11 January and requires her presence. She is accusing the paper of invasion of privacy for publishing part of a letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle.

According to sources, Harry and Meghan will spend two weeks isolating at Frogmore Cottage, their home in the UK, ahead of the trial.

Nicholl says the news would likely be “disappointing” for the 94-year-old monarch who is missing Harry and her great-grandson Archie, whom she has not seen for a year.

Sources say due to the Covid-19 crisis Harry has no intention of heading home anytime soon and he and Meghan are planning on spending Christmas with their pals, Canadian record producer David Foster (70) and his American wife, actress/singer Katharine McPhee (36), who went to school with Meghan in Los Angeles.

Insiders say Harry considers David “a surrogate dad” and he and Meghan want to invite the couple, who recently announced they are expecting their first child, for Christmas along with Meghan’s mom.

“Meghan very much wants to host the first Christmas at their new home,” a source told the Daily Mirror. “She’s really excited and planning on doing all the traditions she grew up with as a child, including the cooking.

“She’ll have her mom there and has invited David and Katharine. They want to get on with their new lives. Christmas with Harry’s family is not in the plan.”
