DIPLOMACY RULES
For many years the queen hosted a white-tie banquet for hundreds of members of the UK’s diplomatic corps at Buckingham Palace. This picture, taken in 2016, shows (from left) Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; Prince Charles; the queen; Prince Philip; Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. The men wore ceremonial dress of the Order of the Garter, the most senior and oldest order of British chivalry, which includes knee breeches instead of pants to display the order’s garter on their left calf.

CONFIRMATION TIME
At the age of 14, Prince William was confirmed as a member of the Church of England by the bishop of London in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
His close family and five of his six godparents then gathered in the drawing room of Windsor Castle for this picture, taken in March 1997.
One of his godfathers, South African-born author Laurens van der Post – a friend of Prince Charles’ – had died in 1996. Diana died four months after this photograph was taken.
