My day with a celebrity hairdresser

My hairstory

I’ve always been a bit self conscious about my hair. No, not a bit. Very. It’s so dry that it actually sounds like rustling leaves when I touch it, and frizzes at the mere mention of moisture.

Years of home dying turned it into a disgusting shade of red, which then went an even worse shade of orange and caused my guy friends to call me Fire - as in the gladiator. NOT a good look.

To add insult to my hair injury, most of my friends have shiny, bouncy tresses, with no split ends or dryness to speak of. They wash it, let it air dry and look like they’ve stepped out of a movie scene. Biatches.

So, over the years, I’ve come to accept the fact that I was born this way. I didn’t think anything could help it, and made peace with the fact that a good old fashioned bolla would have to do the trick. Every. Single. Day.

Okay, I splurged on a ghd, but aint nobody got time for straightening hair all day, every day! It was then reserved for special occasions. (And even then my hair would flop onto my shoulders in sad strands.)

So, because of my lack of confidence in my mop, I never even thought of going to a professional hairdresser to get it fixed. My BFF cut my ends when I needed it and I dyed it myself (big mistake, Jana, big mistake.)

Honestly, I didn’t think that anyone could save the hair mess I was in.

Before

Enter David Gillson aka My Life Saver aka Hairdresser to the Stars

I started hearing rumours of a miracle man that could save the day. When I found out that David is Lee-Ann Liebenberg’s go-to guy, I couldn’t keep myself from finding out more (I’m a bit obsessed with her, but that’s a story for another day.)

So, off I went to Carlton Hair in Constantia, to see what the legendary David could do to save my hair.

This man has won awards for his styling and innovation and has travelled to Cosmoprof - the world’s biggest hair show for the past ten years. He’s been featured in all the major local fashion mags and has been judging the SA Style Awards for almost a decade. You get the point – the man is a genius.

Leaving Carlton without orange bits in my hair would have been enough for me. But what I left with far outweighed any of my expectations. As a girl that’s never had a professional hair consultation, I had no idea what miracles could be performed!

My hair transformation

David dyed my hair a brilliant chocolate brown, using “A New Colour” from Davines. This product is completely odourless and ammonia free, so no headaches or heavy smells!

And he didn’t sommer dye my hair the old fashioned way. Oh no, that’s not how David does it! He used a method called Flamboyage. Unlike other colour accessories currently on the market (aluminium foils, strips in various materials, etc.), Flamboyage Meche enables not only isolation, but the selection of a small and random amount of hair to be coloured.

With the help of this new colour tool, the colourist can achieve and easily repeat chromatic results that are unattainable when working free-hand along the hair length.

My hair also received a much needed treatment from the Davines Natural Tech range – which smelled (and looked) so lovely that I had to buy myself the Energizing shampoo (the range consists of energizing, nourishing, purifying, rebalancing, detoxyfying, well being and calming shampoos, conditioner and treatments).

The result?

It’s been a month and my hair still looks as good as the day I walked out of the salon (minus David's super styling techniques) And all I do is wash it, let it air dry… and I look like I’ve stepped out of a movie scene. Yup, I guess I’m one of those lucky biatches now.

After

Other than all the compliments I’ve been getting (David also cut my hair slightly, to make it look more bouncy and full bodied) the best part of all of this is the realisation that crappy hair can be fixed (if your budget allows it, that is.) So, I’ve stopped stressing about it, and have decided that never again will I cut or dye my own hair, or let my poor tresses suffer like they did in the past.

Here’s to good hair!
