Buying your first big furniture item is a memorable experience. It's a bit like choosing a partner. The best ones last long - easily twenty to thirty years. And as with romantic choices, you shouldn't make any hasty decisions.
Choose the look
A good place to start is by deciding what look you want. A couch can change the look of your interior, so think where you want your décor to go, rather than matching your existing look. A few smaller items will then be all you need to complete the new look.
There are many sofa styles, but generally straight lines look more contemporary while curved lines are more feminine.
Soft chunky cushions look more cozy while firm deep-buttoned cushions look formal. What are you going for?
Ask the shop for a few fabric samples and take it home to see how it looks in your lounge. Think of it as a first date. A big dark couch can be overwhelming in a small space, just as a small formal item might look lost in a busy room.
You should always measure your lounge so you know what a comfortable size for a couch would be.

What can you afford?
Looks are important, but it can be deceiving. This is true when it comes to lovers too.
Many important factors that should be considered cannot be seen. And generally, you get what you pay for. The size and quality of the upholstery and craftsmanship, as well as whether it is locally manufactured or imported will determine the price.
A timeless couch is a good option if money is tight. It’s best to rather save up a bit so you can afford quality and not just looks. Because we've all been deceived by a looker or two, haven't we?
Comfort
Sit or lie on a sofa before buying it. Everyone has different needs. If you want a couch for cuddling, or if you need it for the whole family to watch TV together, make sure it is deep and big enough. A good couch should be able to double as a spare bed in a pinch.
Quality and craftsmanship
Longevity will be determined by the quality of material used and the craftsmanship. Choose quality upholstery and high density foam. A frame made of hard wood will be stronger than a pine, plastic or a metal frame.
The frame should also have screws or dowels in the corners and not just be glued together. If you buy from a reputable shop, they’ll be able to provide you with all this information and give you a warranty. A warranty is a bit like a marriage contract. It doesn't matter how in love you are, you wouldn't think of getting hitched without one now would you?
Lifestyle
Consider your lifestyle: if you have kids and animals, opt for durable and most importantly, washable, upholstery or leather to ensure that your couch looks new for longer.
