Learner Driver Diaries: Choosing a Driving School

accreditation
Who knew a quick Google search would bring up over 1,6 million results? With so many options, it’s hard to pick one driving school. If you’ve passed your learner’s test, here are a few things no-one ever tells you.

•    You're going to need lots of airtime.

•    Every single driving school promises that you'll "pass the first time". Don't believe the hype.

•    Every driving instructor thinks they're professional. Not all of them actually are.

•    Don't even click on Gumtree. All it's going to do is confuse you.

•    Keep an eye out for these magical words: "Endorsed by the South African Institute of Driving Instructors".

•    In fact, just go straight to the SAIDI site.

The first thing I thought? "Where are the cheapest lessons?" Big mistake.

Please, please, believe me when I say do not skimp when you're looking for a driving school. Honestly, you'll only pay more in the long-term since you'll have to start lessons all over again with another school. It's not worth it.

Anyways, I eventually asked my friends and colleagues, only to discover that most of them had been taught the basics by their dads, moms, cousins, boyfriends or friends. I resigned myself to the fact that I'd just have to fork out the cash and rely on a complete stranger to teach me – one of the many pitfalls of being a single woman in a city that's across the country from my family. Sigh.

And so, what did I do? I asked my colleagues again for any driving schools they could recommend – only to realise that most of them are based the other side of town, which doesn't help.

Finally, I did the only thing that made sense. I called a random school and booked my first driving lesson.

Bad start. You can read about it here.
