How to make an entrance

Tiles offer an array of creative options to spruce up entrance areas, whether it be the area outside your front door or the entrance hall where you welcome guests.

Remember, first impressions are lasting!

From silver metallic mosaic tiles on a feature wall to larger format porcelain tiles on the floor, the options and combinations are endless. "We are no longer restricted to just plain tiles for floors and walls," says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at Tile Africa.

Decorative mosaic tiles allow you to play around with different colours, textures and patterns to create a unique floor or wall area. Experiment with floral or geometrical designs or be inspired by colourful patterns from Morocco, white and blue designs reminiscent of the Mediterranean or black and white checkerboard designs.

Mix glass tiles with metallic and natural stone mosaics to create interesting designs with your own personal style – the only limit is your imagination.

Natural materials, such as sandstone, travertine and riven cladding make for a dramatic entrance area. The texture of the natural stone grabs the attention and creates a striking wall finish. Compliment the roughness of the stone with over-sized pots and candelabras.

Tiles are suitable for any area, especially entrance halls, which are high traffic areas. "Choose a floor tile with a higher resistance to abrasion," says Kate.

Useful tips to know when applying decorative tiles:

  • Decide on the overall look and theme that you are trying to achieve.

  • Get samples before making your full purchase. Place the samples in the space where you will be using them to ensure they are the right colour and go well with the environment in which you will be using them.

  • Make sure that you purchase the correct tile for the intended area. For example, for a mosaic floor, glass is not the best option as it is smooth and will be very slippery when wet. Ceramic mosaics would then be a better option.

  • Mosaics may be slightly more expensive than regular tiles. Tile Africa recommends using mosaic tiles as a feature on a wall or as part of a floor design.
