Find your spiritual side

accreditation

1. Hang out with spiritual people
We all know people who are more in touch with their spirituality than we are – seek them out and learn from them. Think of them as mini-gurus who are there to show you the way to spiritual truth.

2. Do your homework
There are many spiritual practices out there, so you're bound to find something that suits your personality and world view. Pop into a Christian or New Age bookshop and browse, or do the same online and see what you find. Keep searching for truth and you'll soon find it.

3. Speak to God
Prayer is a way to commune with your Creator on a personal level – don't neglect it. Your prayers don't have to be full of religious phrases or in some higher language – talk to God as if He were one of your parents, and your prayers will be heard. Getting into the habit of praying every night before you go to bed, or first thing in the morning, will make you more aware of spirituality.

4. Meditate
Many people think mediation is only for Hindus, but it's an integral part of most religions, even Christianity. Meditation isn't about emptying your mind – it's about focusing it. It's about tuning out all distractions and concentrating on only one thing. Meditation will help you to find your innate spirituality.

5. Keep a journal
Keeping a spiritual journal will remind you to look for the spiritual within the material. By focusing your thoughts on spiritual matters, you will see the hand of the Creator in everyday life.

6. Celebrate silence
There's a reason many monks take a vow of silence and people go on retreats where no-one speaks for an entire weekend – in silence we hear the voice of God. Taking time to be silent on a regular basis – even if it's only for a couple of hours once a month – allows you to get in touch with your spiritual side.

7. Go back to church
Sunday mornings seem so much better spent lounging in bed with a mug of coffee and the newspapers than going to church. But just being amongst other Christians can rekindle your spirituality. As you raise your hands in praise or bow your head in communal prayer, you will remember why communal fellowship is so important.

8. Watch the grass grow
We're very good at rushing around, but slowing down and attempting to do something that seems ridiculous – like watching grass grow – brings us back to an awareness of spiritual matters. Our lives are very busy, and as a result we often push God and spirituality onto the back burner. To bring those things to the fore, we need to learn to slow down and focus.

9. Take up yoga
Yoga is an amazing activity – not only does it engage your mind and body, but it takes care of your spirit as well. Yoga teaches you to control your body as well as your thoughts, and will give you good breathing techniques.

10. Give something away
Giving your old clothes to a faceless charity is not good enough in spiritual terms – you need to give something of your time. There is no more spiritual experience than when we give to others and sacrifice something of ourselves in the process.
