Ahead of the UN World Conference on Racism hosted in Durban at the turn of the century, South Africa held its own version to talk about this country’s experience of racial discrimination and, hopefully, map a way forward.

The country was barely six years out of apartheid and it was clear that, no matter how hard founding president Nelson Mandela had tried to forge a united nation through his reconciliation project, South Africans were still not finding each other.
