Furniture and appliance company Lewis Group is bracing itself for difficult times, with CEO Johan Enslin rating the current retail trading cycle as one of the toughest in his nearly 30-year career.
Speaking to News24 after the release of results for the six months to September, Enslin acknowledged that the trading environment was "not unexpected", adding that JSE-listed Lewis had been warning the broader market for the past 18 months that "this is coming".
"I’ve been CEO for 13 years or so, but I’ve been in the furniture retail industry for the past close to 30 years now. At various levels we’ve seen a lot of cycles before and I can tell, this cycle and where we are heading to, is most certainly one of the toughest ones I have seen during my 30-year career."
