Halloween is fast approaching and historically it's never been that big in South Africa. For many, it is usually a curious event depicted in American film and television. Over the years, SA has gotten more into the spooky spirit, bit by bit. Though trick or treating isn't that popular in Mzansi, there is another way to bring in the Halloween season - by watching some scary movies.

Here's a selection of five horror films with an SA connection.

1. Beast (2022)

This wilderness survival horror film is set and shot in South Africa and features Idris Alba. In Beast, Alba goes into the SA wilderness and has to protect his family. Though it is through an American lens, the film shows aspects of local culture.

It's a thrilling watch with a strong male lead that enhances the experience. It hits all the familiar beats of a fun blockbuster with decent frights.

The synopsis: "Recently widowed Dr Nate Daniels and his two teenage daughters travel to a South African game reserve managed by Martin Battles, an old family friend and wildlife biologist. However, what begins as a journey of healing soon turns into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of bloodthirsty poachers, begins stalking them."

Cast: Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley, Leah Jeffries
