All you need to know about summer hair

It seems that with each new season comes new hair worries. But luckily we have the help of super stylist David Gillson, creative director of Carlton Hair and owner of Carlton Hair Hyde Park and Constantia Village.

We did a quick Q&A with him to find out what trends we should be following this season and how to best take care of our locks.

What are the hottest summer hair trends that we should know about and follow this season?

Short hair is the hottest trend this season, as celebrity after celebrity give in to this trend it really is all about short hair. Go punky life Miley Cyrus, sophisticated like Jennifer Lawrence's latest look or Glam pixie like Pamela Anderson new cut. I've been extremely surprised at the eagerness with which the South African woman has embraced this trend.

Mid length madness is a new trend for the not so brave the very long layered look is being replaced with a fresh sharp nearly one length mid shoulder cut think Alexa Chung or Gwyneth Paltrow.

When it comes to colour uber natural tone on tone Flamboyage looks, or looks with hints of pastel tones are big right now.

With styling it's all about texture. Grunge is making big waves in fashion circles again and is influencing hair trends. Gone are Kardashian style curls, while scrunched texture is in. Use Davines More Inside - this is a strong wax to achieve this slept in look.

Apparently greens, yellows and pinks are all hot right now. But they’re also quite risky for the average woman. How can we still add some fun to our style without going over the top?

It‘s been surprising just how the average woman is embracing these colours. Done correctly they can be soft and very flattering. Done in hidden panels in a haircut they can create quirky interest to a cut.

Which celebrity hair styles would you say ordinary women can easily recreate for and how? And how?

Look to Jennifer Lawrence and model Coco Rocha for short hair inspiration that is soft and flattering and Jennifer Anderson new mid length with a soft layer would suit nearly everyone.

Should we be protecting our hair from the sun, like we do our faces? How?

Most definitely! Hair really needs sun protection - the Davines Oi oil leave in milk has a natural high sun protection and is perfect for this.

What products and techniques are great for creating messy, beachy waves?

Davines More Inside a sea salt spray is beach beautiful  hair in a bottle Davines More inside this is a curling mousse is great for controlled beach waves

Does ethnic hair need more protection from the sun and water?

Ethnic hair is naturally very dry and has often been relaxed or straightened than coloured so it definitely needs the protection of something like the Davines Oi line with its oil, leave in milk, shampoo and conditioner - they work wonders on ethnic hair.

What can black/coloured women do to go through summer without worrying about messing up their hair at the beach or pool?

A Brazilian blow out can really be a great help for summer and the Oi oil works wonders.
