You will need

  • plant pot or vase in a shape suitable for a lampshade
  • cling wrap
  • a few sheets of mulberry or tissue paper
  • cold glue
  • 1,25mm-gauge galvanised wire
  • 0,7mm-gauge galvanised binding wire
  • scissors
  • paintbrush or a sponge
  • wire cutters

  • To make

    1. Cover the plant pot tightly with cling wrap.

    2. Cut two A4 pieces of paper (or use prec ut A4 sheets). Paint one sheet of paper at a time with slightly watered down cold glue and place on the up-ended plastic-covered pot. Push the air bubbles out with the brush to smooth it all over. Place the next sheet over this to cover the rest of the pot and press down over the top edge. Leave to dry.

    3. Cut four lengths of 1,25mm-gauge wire, each long enough to go over the pot from one side to the other and allowing a slight overlap. Straighten them. Cut a 15cm length of 0,7mm-gauge binding wire and, holding two longer lengths of wire together in a cross, bind them at the centre. Add the next length, bind again and repeat with the last length. Place the wire shape on top of the base, slightly off centre to allow for the wiring, and bend the individual wires down over the pot, placing them where possible over the join lines of the paper. Turn the pot right way up, space the wires equally and pull them upwards as tightly as possible, and bend them into the pot.

    4. Cut a large piece of paper and cover with slightly diluted glue. Place it over the wire on the first layers. Repeat with more paper to cover the entire wire framework, leave to dry and repeat on e more.

    5. Neatly mark the length you want the shade to be and cut it neatly. Cut the wires with wire cutters. Trim the paper shorter if you are planning to add the beaded rim.

    Decorating the Shades

Pink shade: Trim the paper but leave the wires exposed. Weave lengths of binding wire, threaded with beads, through and around the framework wires to cover them and create a bead border. Trim the ends of the wire framework to about 1,5cm and bend them to the inside of the shade to hold the beads in place.

Green shade: Trim the paper neatly at the bottom and clip the wires. Mark eight equally spaced circles around the bottom of the shade and carefully cut out with a craft knife. Hang a bead on a medium to large jump ring, punch a small hole above each circle and push the ring through, and bend it closed.

    To suspend

Switch off the electricity supply. Remove the lamp holder from the cabling, thread it through the lampshade and re-attach the cabling to the lamp holder. Add a bulb (use 60W bulbs only) and suspend.
