An app to make you pretty?

There’s a new app making sure you always put your best face forward.

Aviv Gadot loved taking photos of his beautiful wife with his Iphone and uploading them to Facebook. Unfortunately, his wife was not as in love with the idea and used to grab his phone, deleting most of his pictures when she had the chance.

"She's beautiful and she feels bad about how she looks in photos. That's wrong. I wanted her to feel good about herself," he told Businessinsider.

So he designed Pixtr, an app that uses face-recognition software to scan photos and make minor adjustments, like slimming a nose or jaw-line, trimming eyebrows and correcting camera distortion.

In a few seconds, the photo is ‘fixed’ eliminating all your ‘horrible imperfections’ and making sure the world only ever sees you looking your best.

Reading about Aviv and his insecure wife, I assumed the loving husband would have used his engineering skills for good; developing an ‘affirmation-style’ app helping his spouse see herself through his adoring eyes.

But I guess I was wrong!

Obviously aware of today’s visually-obsessed culture, he realised he would make far more money developing Pixr, the app that promises to “put your best face forward.”

This seems to me like a giant step backwards, especially after the powerful and uplifting DOVE advert that went viral last week.
The ad features a forensic artist that draws two portraits of women without ever seeing them. the first is based on their description of themselves, and the second is based on a stranger’s description.

Not surprising was that the second set of pictures portrayed a far more forgiving portrait, helping the women realise just how hard they were on themselves; over-analyzing all their imperfections that no-one else even notices.

What women learn from the DOVE commercial is stomped on and destroyed by apps like Pixr, making it that much harder for us to move away from society’s obsession with image and unrealistic ideas of beauty.

Aviv’s wife didn’t need her husband to design a whole app to help make her feel beautiful, she needed to realise that she was beautiful. Just the way she was: imperfections and all.
