A bathroom for any age

As we go through different life stages our needs and tastes change with us and affect what we require from our bathrooms. "The secret to creating the perfect bathroom for your particular needs is in the colour and accessories," says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager for Tile Africa.

For a bachelor pad
Try clean and square lines with no clutter and frills to distract the attention. Monochromatic and strong colours used sparingly make a stylish statement. Tiles such as polished black porcelain or glass and metal mosaics create a look that is edgy and urban.

Select bathroom fittings in sleek squared off shapes such as the Ostia range from Isca and the Linea range from Pennyware. Bold showerheads in geometric shapes look great and deliver a man-sized shower. Cool glass and metal are very much part of this look and can be included in a mix of materials as part of the bathroom fittings or as metal and glass mosaics fitted with the tiles.

For young couples
If you struggle with space and a tight budget, try a space saving bath such as the Discovery shower bath, which is shower and bath in one. A bathroom in a bedroom is very romantic and creates a luxurious space to unwind and relax. The Cambridge slipper bath is perfect for this romantic retro look. Consider tiling in one shade throughout the bedroom to create the feeling of flow and harmony.

For children
Bring splashes of colour to the children's bathroom with glass mosaic tiles, to bring out an element of fun. Consider bright coloured items such as towels, face cloths, bathmats, hooks and toothpaste holders. Plan for adequate storage and hanging space with spacious vanities and double rodded towel rails.

For the whole family
When it comes to the family bathroom, use bright coloured tiles and tiles that are more forgiving and won't show dirt easily. To reduce the clutter, install beautiful and practical vanities, which are stocked by Tile Africa. Bath time could be a family affair with a family-sized spa bath for fun moments in the tub.

For the retired couple
Kate recommends lighter coloured tiles and more elaborate borders to add style and sophistication to the bathroom. A spa bath and heated towel rails are indulgences that will add pleasure to your bath time.

"Do some research into the theme you want to recreate and always remember to allow for adequate storage space," says Kate.
