Growing up in rural in KZN meant eating a lot of rich food and because of that, I became a big girl. The weight affected my confidence badly. I lived in hope that people would fall in love with my bubbly personality and look past my size. When the leggings trend became popular, I couldn’t join in because my mother told me I was too big for it, and needed to cover up.

I started my weight loss journey in 2015 just before I was to get married. I saw a picture of a strapless wedding dress doing the rounds on social media and something about the image didn’t sit well with me. The lady wearing the dress looked very uncomfortable and I knew instantly I didn’t want that for myself. I wanted to walk down the aisle feeling comfortable in whatever I chose to wear. This was the Aha! moment I needed to finally tackle my weight.

Now, I am more confident — both physically and mentally. I used to wonder why I always felt bloated and uncomfortable but it was because of my terrible eating practices. Now I’m more mindful of what I put into my body. I’ve joined the low-carb revolution and go to the gym religiously. I start my day at 4:40 am and attend my exercise class at 5:15 am.

I enjoy group sessions, especially The Grid, which involves spinning, shape workouts and kicking movements. I’m yet to try boxing — I’m scared it will break my nails [chuckles]!
