Do you come from a musical background? What influences you?
My musical enthusiasm grew from that into a Youtube channel that I formulated at Wits University during my studies which at the time generated a bit of traction. From there I went into the working world, but the thirst was never quenched so I started sing back-up vocals for a hip hop veteran Fortune Masina and his musical family. I ended up singing for a number of artists, such as Clint Brink, RJ benjamin, Kabomo ,MXO, and more through working with Fortune. It was after this experience that I decided to work on my own music, having had the courage and the advice from the people I looked up to the most.
When and how did you start music?
My family loves music so whenever I was around them growing up there were a number of influences that I picked up, I am the first to really pursue music in my family officially , but I had a younger sister who passed away a few years ago who was just as talented. I definitely think a lot of my zeal to carry on when times are tough comes from her. Musically I am influenced by the greats, Nina Simone, Dorothy Dandridge, Billie holiday, Ella Fitzgerald , Brenda Fassie, Lala Hathaway, Lebo Mathosa and the mother of RNB TK, just to name a few.
Please tell us a bit about your music, what is your sound like?
So my music varies depending on my mood, I write my own songs so I generally associate sounds with the content or how I’m feeling on that particular day. On my upcoming project you will be engulfed in Afro beat happy love songs, Trap soul sad love songs, Pure Rnb based jams that speak to the state of the country , house songs , it will be an exciting mix and everybody will have a song that they like ( hopefully).
Who is your target market?
I don't think I can "box in" the people I am targeting , I can only hope the music resonates with anybody who hears it for the first time, I hope it reminds you of someone, or makes you laugh , or dance , or dream. I think any market is capable of doing that.
Please tell us about your current song, Yandichaza. What inspired it? Was it written for anyone specific?
Yandichaza is a Xhosa word meant to describe someone who really impresses you and someone who turns you on. The song was inspired by the meaning of the word. It’s a flirty, playful song, that really emphasizes the fact that women can find a man attractive and it doesn't always have to end up in a relationship. We can also just live in the moment, and we are not afraid to go for what we want.
Are you currently working on anything?
Yes, I have an album coming out this year that I have been working for almost two years which I am really excited about. I am also shooting some new visuals for Yandichaza that will hopefully be out in November,
What advice would you give someone who would like to follow your path?
Make your music first, focus on your writing, use every resource you have that's free to make sure you making the best music you can. After you are done and you believe in your offering raise money to help release it. The rest is faith , hard work and practice. Lastly........ Never lose your enthusiasm!!
