Beads are the favourite hair accessories that are not only a timeless hair statement but are also the ‘it’ hair trend right now.

For a while now we’ve been seeing women using beads as accents in a variety of braiding styles including the traditional box braids, the Fulani inspired braids and cornrows among others.

In 2019, arguably following the inspiration of the styles mentioned above, we have seen a resurgence of the iconic beaded wig styles – and money celebrities have been quick to assume this style.

While the beaded wig has sacred significance in many African cultures, it has also made a mark in the fashion and beauty platforms.

This wig style has been seen on Thandiswa Mazwai and Bonnie Mbuli long before 2019. King Tha herself is often seen now in braids adorned with beads, while Bonnie has brought back her full head of beads more than once.

Other prominent women who have worn this look include Milisuthando Bongela, Nandi Madida and Rharha Nembhard.

We have also seen the beaded wig on the runways. In 2016, the Colour fashion label by Nandi Madida and designer Inga Madyibi showed their collection at the Mecedes Benz Fashion Johannesburg Fashion Week with models donning the beaded style.

In 2019, the beaded wig has been resurrected once again and celebrities are embracing the look. This are five celebrities who have given the beaded wig their own interpretation in 2019:

Amanda Black

Jennifer Lopez

J.Lo attended the 2019 Met Gala wearing this beaded Versace ensemble.

Lady Skollie

Celebrating the announcement of her designing South Africa's commemorative R5 coin, Lady Skollie showed up in this beaded wig with two of South Africa's flag colours.

Unathi Msengana

Appearing in her music video with Lady Smith Black Mambazo, Unathi sported this head-to-toe beaded look.

Kim Kardashian

At the 2019 Met Gala after party Kim Kardashian sported this blue beaded look, apparently inspired by legendary musician and actress, Cher.
