A new way to rev up your beauty routine is to wash your face with sparkling water. Yes, you read that correctly.

This effervescent beauty treatment is a hot trend in Japan and Korea at the moment — two countries that are renowned for being leaders in skincare innovations. It’s an invigorating experience that is like a super-charged and super-fast spa facial.

Beauty bloggers around the world swear by it, saying the bubbles act like small micro-brushes, cleaning pores and removing dead skin cells for brighter, toned skin. Clogged and oily pores are not only a source of breakouts, but also give skin a dull look and make pores look larger.

Those who’ve tried this treatment say it delivers oxygen deeper into the skin barrier, increasing circulation, decreasing puffiness and giving you a glow.

With a SodaStream machine, it’s quick and simple to do a DIY version of this hot new skincare regimen. (It’s also easier on the wallet than the pricey effervescent facial packets that you can buy.)

Since there are no other ingredients besides water, it’s a natural experience that won’t leave any residue on your skin. Some beauty experts dab sparkling water on cotton pads and use it as a daily toner.

The exact regimen will depend on your skin type — whether it’s oily, dry or sensitive. For all types of skin, first wash your face with your usual cleanser. Then:

For Normal or Oily Skin

Fill a bowl with sparkling water and soak your face in it for no more than 10-20 seconds. Do this once a week for normal skin and up to three times a week for oily skin.

For Sensitive or Dry Skin
Fill a bowl with an equal mixture of sparkling water and still water, and then soak your face in it for no more than 10-20 seconds. Do this once a week.

Whatever your skin type, give this routine a test run for a month and see what the results are. Lots of people rave about brighter, fresher skin after just a month.

Sparkling water is also useful for another skincare regimen: Hydration! Water is crucial to maintaining healthy skin, and when you are properly hydrated, your skin is plumper and more elastic. This means it’s less likely to crack and let in the outside grime that can cause irritations and blemishes.

One way to create a luxurious “spa water” at home is to add one of these lovely combinations to a glass of sparkling water:

•         Cucumber and rosemary
•         Raspberry and lemon
•         Strawberry and mint
•         Tarragon and lime
•         Blackberry and basil

Happy hydrating!
