The drama of hair

accreditation
‘Take it all off!’ I said.

‘Really?’ the stylist asked, already reaching into the drawer for the clippers.

‘Go mad!’ I said. And she did.

Going from over the shoulder to cropped is one of the most dramatic changes a woman can make to her looks. I’ve done it three times and I always feel a sense of renewal and energy.

I am sure you could do a thesis on the various elements that have to come together for us to go: ‘What the hell!’ and change our looks so radically.

For me it was a combination of getting a little bonus at work (hairdressers are getting blooming expensive, aren’t they?) and a severe irritation with the giant sheep that was growing out of my head.

I’ve got this wild, curly-but-not-quite mop of hair that grows outwards rather than down. I spent years trying to get it to do something different – it’s been every colour, short, very long and everything in between. But I’ve never really had a hairstyle that was a failure. Well, not since the ill-advised Purdey cut of 1977...

I don’t bother to fight with my hair any more, we’ve declared a truce of sorts. But every now and again the wild woman look starts to feel just too messy – and out come the clippers.

The new radical crop seems to be a success – people keep telling me I look younger, which is good, I suppose.

There’s that fine line. You don’t want them to gush too extensively about how you look so much better. Because then you can’t help wondering: ‘Exactly how crappy did I look before?’

Meagan is also going for a haircut today, and I’m dying to see if I’ve started a trend. Mind you, if I had a sheet of black silk like she does, I probably wouldn’t cut it all off, ever. In fact I think I caught her looking at me a bit nervously this morning and holding onto her hair protectively.

How do you and your hair get along? And have you ever had that BAD haircut that could only be resolved with a series of beanies? Send us a picture and if we get enough we’ll make a gallery, or tell us your hair stories.
