Understanding the basics will help you choose the right product for your curl type and texture, which can range from thick/thin, fine/course, curly/kinky, long/short, just to name a few!

Here’s an easy starting point for creating and maintaining a routine for healthy, beautiful hair.

De-tangling

Before your first shampoo, make sure that your hair is detangled properly. The best way to do this is with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Separate your hair into eight sections, add your detangler and gently comb through your hair from the ends to the roots.

Shampoo

Always start off with a clean scalp. Shampoo your hair at least once a week. The health of your scalp is the basis for healthy hair. Make sure that you avoid products containing ingredients such as sodium laureth sulfates and parabens. They will suck out all the moisture in your hair, leaving it dry.

Shampoos we love: Tresemme Botanique Shampoo, Dark n Lovely Au Naturale’s Anti-Shrinkage Shampoo, Afro Botanics Black Pearl Sulphate Free Shampoo

Conditioner

Everyone knows that a naturalista loves her conditioner. It’s always the first product on the shopping list. Nothing beats a conditioner with great slip. Make sure you avoid products containing silicones, as they cause build up which eventually makes your hair look dull and grimy.

Conditioners we love: Afro Botanics Black Pearl Hydrating Conditioner, Tresemme Botanique Conditioner

Co-Wash

Co-washing your hair is a relatively new concept, but one that helps to keep your hair moisturized. It’s basically washing your hair with a mild conditioner – a way to keep your wash day away a little longer. Even though this concept may not be for everyone, it’s definitely worth a try.

Leave-in Conditioner

Once your hair is nice and clean, you’ll need to add some leave-in conditioner to keep your hair from frizzing. A good leave-in conditioner moisturizes and provides strength to your hair.

Styling Cream

You cannot leave home without your styling cream! It locks in the moisture of your leave-in conditioner, adds shine and it provides perfect definition to your hair. So whether you need popping curls, coils or even if you do a twist or braid-out. Your styling cream is the answer in keeping your hair looking fab!

Styling creams we love: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Cantu Shea Butter For Natural Hair Coconut Curling Cream

Deep Condition

For stronger, healthy, manageable hair; always be sure to deep condition your hair at least once every second week. Apply your conditioner or hair mask and leave it on your hair for at least an hour. This hair treatment works wonders on all hair types
