Comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish had faux locs on for the past two months. This was the quarantine hairstyle she chose to protect her hair until this week Tuesday when she went live on Instagram to remove her style which was followed with a big chop.

During the live stream, the actress cut off her locs from the root, cutting off her hair as well.

"I cut all of my hair off cause I want to see my scalp," she wrote in a caption.

"I know where every mole is, but I don't know my scalp."

The star received mixed responses from her followers, some applauding her, while others thought she could be going through a mental breakdown. Tiffany soon addressed the negative reactions in another video, stating that her decision to chop her hair doesn’t symbolise her mental state.

“Why, when a woman decides, ‘Hey, I’m gonna cut this hair off because I wanna see my scalp,’ she gotta have a mental problem?” she said. “Nothing is wrong with my brain; I’m not suffering from no emotional s***, nothing.”

The actress went on to explain that she’d been considering the big chop for years now, and that her decision comes with a lot of freedom.

“I had those braids in for two months, and I cut everything off and jumped in the shower,” she said. “It’s the first time I’ve ever taken a shower and was not concerned about getting my hair wet, and that s*** felt good.”

She also added that having short hair will now give her more time to focus on other things, like working out more and self-care.

“Now, I can go running every day and not have to worry about my hair,”

“As a Black woman, your hair takes a good two to three hours of your day,” she said.

“It’s a lot of work. So, I’m taking time off. I’m gonna use the same energy I would be putting into my hair and put it into my mind.”

Then, Tiffany and her hairstylist shaved all her hair into a brush cut.

And if you've been feeling like doing the same, here are things to consider before making that decision.

  1. You’ll need less time to get ready Short hair requires a lot less time to style. It will dry super-fast and there won’t be a lot of hair that needs to be curled / straightened.
  2. You’ll save on hair products Shorter hair means less shampoo, which will save you money when it comes to buying your hair care products. With most high-quality hair products, a little goes a long way. So, when you have less hair, you’ll only need to use a tiny bit of styling products. This can save a lot of money over time.
  3. It won’t grow back overnight It takes just moments to cut your hair, but growing it back takes much, much longer.  So, when you do decide to get the big chop make sure it is really what you want and understand that it will take some time for it to grow back.
  4. Your hair really does get healthier When you chop your hair off and get rid of the dye damage and split ends, you're giving your hair a chance to restart and regrow. It's softer naturally!
