I have chosen to acknowledge my scars.

A scar is formed during the healing process that follows such a trauma and does not form until the skin has healed completely.

Not all scars are physical.Things happen that are beyond our control or understanding and we are left with marks. An ugly divorce, the loss of a spouse or child, childhood abuse are just some examples of the kinds of crap that life throws at us.

We all have them. While some scars are easy to see, others are harder to spot. But they are there.

Every one of us is walking a path of some sort. We stumble. We fall. We trip. We get up and carry on.

Sometimes the wounds heal by themselves but other times we need a bit of help to heal.  Most of them fade with time but while some disappear completely while there are others that will always be there.

A few years back I read a book. I can’t recall much about it except one scene where a group of people are climbing the Mountain of God. At a certain stage, the angels bow down before them, honouring them for the scars they bear and their scars start to shine. I remember thinking how could the blemishes that we deem so ugly be so precious to God?

I guess it’s all a matter of perspective. The world tells us we have to be perfect. We are bombarded by beautiful models . We have to be thin and run our own company and drive a certain type of car. We have to have it all together and we dare not slip up or let the masks fall away because then we will not measure up. We are under so much pressure to perform. But how does any of this have eternal value?

Is it possible that the pain we endure has a place in the bigger picture and that maybe the scars left by life are important to Somebody or something beyond our logic and understanding?

We all have a story to tell and our scars are part of that story. I have chosen to acknowledge my scars. They make me unique.  They have helped shape me into who I am.They make me beautiful. I am real and I am telling my story.

My scars remind me that I am a survivor. They remind me of the obstacles I have overcome, the mountains I have scaled and the battles I have won. They remind me that there is healing and there is hope and that I am so much stronger than I give myself credit for.

I have chosen to wear my scars with pride!  What will you do with yours?
