- Chicago's Lollapalooza 2020 has been added to the long list of events which have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
- Festival organisers confirmed the news through a statement, saying that the health and safety of attendees, performers and staff is a top priority.
- According to reports, Coachella will be cancelled. However, no official announcement has been made by organisers.
Popular Chicago festival Lollapalooza has been cancelled.
The four-day event was scheduled to take place from 30 July to 2 August 2020, but, in a statement released on their website and social media pages, organisers revealed that things would not be going ahead as planned due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"We wish we could bring Lollapalooza to Grant Park again this year, but we understand why things can't move forward as planned. The health and safety of our fans, artists, partners, staff and community is always our highest priority," the statement reads.
It goes on to say that the event is expected to return in 2021 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
And although they may not be able to meet in person, fans have been asked to keep their calendars open as a virtual event will be hosted on the dates set aside for the festival this year.
"The week-long virtual event will include performances from around the city and beyond, epic archival sets from Chicago and the festival's six international editions, never-before-seen footage from the 1990's and much more [sic]."
According to NME, Billboard reported that Coachella's 2020 festival would not be going forward either. Billboard is said to have obtained an email from the event's parent company, AEG, in which they revealed they would be retrenching staff members.
"Event organisers Goldenvoice are reportedly deciding between running a smaller Coachella event in 2021 in the hopes restrictions have eased, and throwing a full festival in October next year," NME writes.
The coronavirus has seen a number of events being cancelled around the world, with many choosing to move online.
While Glastonbury will not be going ahead either, creators of the Shangri-La area at the festival have announced that they will be hosting "the world's largest" virtual reality event called, Lost Horizon. Attendees will be able to dance, party and chat as they create unique avatars in the virtual world.
