The start of a new year comes with changes, some more drastic and fulfilling than others. Frank Pierce from the US flew to Turkey for a life-changing cosmetic procedure he has always wanted - a beard transplant.

He wrote on Instagram, "Definitely the craziest thing I've done to date. I had to set the tone for 2023!"

"Beauty is pain," Frank shares.

"I am in pain, my face hurts, I can barely move my lips, and I look like Quagmire from the Family Guy, but when this s&*# heals imma [sic] be sexy," he shares in a video after the procedure.

He tells us that he has wanted to be part of the 'beard gang' since his 20s. But it was never about being insecure. "I've always felt that it would look great on me. But I will admit that once I'm healed, I will have a boost of confidence for sure."

He waited all these years because the technology wasn't as advanced, and he hoped his beard would grow, so he gave himself until his 30s to consider the procedure. "I told myself that if I didn't see any growth by age 35, I'd go through with the procedure," the 37-year-old singer and writer says.

Frank spent about $4300 (R72 400), this included flight, hotel stay, shuttle, surgery, care kits and post-op care. He says he has saved a lot of money because in Florida, where he is from, he was quoted $12 000 (R202 600) just for the procedure.

Turkey has become home for cosmetic procedures as we often hear about people from all over the world getting Brazilian butt lifts and breast implants. This time around, a man went viral for sharing his experience of getting a new beard on TikTok.

Men around the world have welcomed him to the 'beard gang'. Others have not had positive things to say, calling him vain.

He tells us, "The negativity doesn't bother me at all. I couldn't imagine living my life to other people's standards. I don't judge any woman who gets work done. I think the world lacks support, especially with people of colour. We have to broaden the idea of how diverse and different we all can be."

The idea that men can't do certain things to enhance their appearance is also outlandish, he believes.

"The double standard doesn't bother me as well. If it did, I would have never gone through with this. I trust myself and encourage more men to be proud of their personal development."
