In celebration of Kouga’s rich heritage, Kouga Municipality, in conjunction with Fountains Mall and Kouga Express, is set to host a mouthwatering Kouga Heritage Recipe Competition – a first for the municipality.

“What better way to celebrate our region’s various cultures than with an array of delicious dishes,” said Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman.

There will be three categories:

  • Meat and vegetable dishes
  • Bread and baked goods
  • Dessert and sweet treats.

The competition is open to all local food enthusiasts to submit their favourite traditional recipes.

To enter, send your original recipe to mbasson@kouga.gov.za. Include Kouga Municipality Heritage Recipe Competition 2023 in the subject field.

Recipes must either be typed or in clearly legible handwriting.

Include the following information:

  • Name and surname
  • Age
  • Address (including suburb)
  • Contact number.

Entry is free and closes at 12:00 on Thursday, September 14. No late entries will be accepted. All qualifying recipes will be posted on Kouga Municipality’s Facebook Page.

Rules

Only residents who live in the Kouga region may enter their original recipe.

Taste test

A panel of independent judges will choose 12 finalists once entries have closed.

Finalists will have to prepare their dish beforehand, to be judged by the panel of judges on Saturday, September 23, at Fountains Mall. Two dishes must be prepared – one small dish for the judges and a second bigger dish that will be donated to a local family in need.

The overall winner in each category will walk away with (to mention some of the prizes):

A Fountains Mall voucher

A recipe book and apron from Kouga Express

A goodie bag from Kouga Municipality

Various other prizes.

The winning recipes will also be published in the Kouga Express.
