Upon retiring in Jeffreys Bay in April 2021, Charmain Kirstein, who initially was a member of the Schnauzer Club in Johannesburg, decided to start her own little Schnauzer walking club, so her pup Dora-Joy could make new friends.
This fur-filled club started from a WhatsApp group, and has grown to nine Schnauzers so far, who meet monthly on Saturday mornings for walks. These walks are a great encouragement tool for the dogs to interact and have fun together.
Their behaviour is closely monitored by their owners where they each react, stop, and listen when their individual whistle is blown. All pups must remain on their leashes, and are taught not to jump on people and children, while enjoying their walks on the beach where all involved have wonderful fellowship and valuable caring time together.
An achievement of the group is that one of the members, Benji, has recently qualified as a Therapy TopDog. He is a great addition to the TopDog group, because mini-Schnauzers are naturally empathetic to human emotions, having deep bonds with their parents.
“Benji is a two-year-old male, who joyfully displays the affectionate nature of Mini Schnauzers. His favourite visit, twice a month, is to the Edenglen and Amala elder care homes.
“Benji joins a team of other owners and dogs to bring smiles up and down the corridors,” says Kirstein.
