Mnquma Amateur Boxing Federation in Butterworth is finalising their preparations to host a one-day boxing tournament, where they will select amateur boxers to compete in the Eastern Cape Boxing Championship early next month.

Boxing federation chairperson in Mnquma, Mbuyiseli Xokolo, told Mthatha Express that on September 1 they will host a boxing event at Butterworth Town Hall, and everyone is welcome to support the boxers.

Xokolo said that all boxing teams around Mnquma are expected to be part of the event, as they are looking to select boxers to compete in the Eastern Cape Boxing Championship which will be held at Mnquma, from September 22 to 27.

Xokolo said that the South Africa Amateur Boxing Federation structure will embrace the boxing championship tournament, and boxers from both genders will be given a chance on the day.

It means that the boxing event will give male and female boxers a chance to showcase their talent in front of selectors for a team that will represent the Mnquma region in the provincial tournament.

Xokolo has also confirmed that they are ready to host the event as they have already secured the Butterworth Town Hall, where the boxers will fight and now they are finalising their preparations this week.

By hosting this event, Mnquma Amateur Boxing Federation is working to revive the sport of boxing in areas like Centane, Ngqamakhwe and Butterworth.

In previous years, the Mnquma area used to produce great boxers, like Hlanga Kanzi, Lwazi Mzolisa, Simamkele Zakade and others.

Recently there is not a single professional boxer in Mnquma, so by organising such a tournament, the boxing federation is aiming at recruiting young, talented boxers.

Xokolo has also urged sponsors who are interested in contributing to boxing development to contact him at 073 930 6165. He said that they need support from sponsors, so they can have better training equipment for the boxers, as they are currently struggling.

During the main event in September, all regions throughout the province are expected to be represented and former boxers will be part of the event, helping to motivate the aspiring young boxers.
