The first South African black female chartered accountant, Nonkululeko Gobodo, from Corana locality in Mthatha but residing in Johannesburg, has published her first book titled Awakened To My True self.
She said this book is about her life, as she was the first black South African female to obtain the qualification of chartered accountant in 1987.
“People are always surprised when they hear about my journey, to the extent that they used to ask me about writing my book. I ended up writing this book with the aim of telling my story,” said Gobodo.
She added that when people hear about her status, they always look at her not knowing that life has its ups and downs. Gobodo confirmed that she fell pregnant when she was 17, doing standard 9 (Grade 11).
According to her, her parents said she should get married because she should not have a child who was fatherless.
“Sometimes the solution of your problem lies in your problem. Even if you fall pregnant at an early age you lose direction in life, but even on that you must try to find a solution in your problem.”
She said while she was still in that darkness, she went to work in his father’s business named Eyethu Body Works in Mthatha. One of the well-known auditors, Wiseman Nkuhlu, was auditing her father’s books.
Gobodo said she was taught to do bookkeeping, and other things related to business, in her father’s business.
She also went back to school to do standard 10 (Grade 12).
Gobodo said after she passed her matric she went to Walter Sisulu University (it was called University of Transkei then) where she did a B.Com in Accounting.
According to her, after finishing that she went to do training at the accounting firm KPMG, and this led her to being able to sit for her board exams.
She confirmed that she then started an auditor’s firm called Gobodo Incorporated, and she ended up with several branches all over South Africa.
“I then worked with Sizwe Ntsaluba Incorporate; this partnership led us to start Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo Black Accounting Firm.
This was the biggest firm which stood with other international firms. Now I am on the Board of Directors for different companies that are under the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.”
Gobodo said that people, more especially women and young people, should stand up and do something about their lives.
“You must know that you are talented, and if you are pulling yourself up you can achieve what you want.”
She said that her book is available in all book stores and online stores like Takealot, Loot, and Blank Page, etc.
