What we know: Environmental activists are calling on South Africans to boycott Shell service stations over peak travel season this December, as part of growing calls to stop the oil and gas company from conducting seismic surveys off the east coast.
The details: Speaking to Fin24, environmental group The Green Connection's strategic lead Liz McDaid said that over the last couple of weeks, people have already been protesting at Shell service stations across the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
A closer look: Scientists have warned that the seismic surveys will interfere with marine life, especially those which use sound to navigate their way in the water. Some of the harsh effects presented in the documentary Becoming Invisible, directed by Oceans Not Oil co-founder Janet Solomon, include temporary hearing loss, damage to reproductive organs, damage to tissue, and causing stress in animals.
