When most people think KAP sani2c they think of a mountain bike race that is a gruelling, three-day, 265km, blister-filled, saddle-sore-inducing test of pure perseverance and heart. And that is most people.
Cyclists think of the commitment – the dedication, the 4am wake ups for training days. Organisers think of the logistics, of months of careful planning. And anyone living along the route in the south-eastern province of KwaZulu Natal remembers cheering on riders as they make their way on their epic quest.
And the truth is, KAP sani2c is all of these things.
But it is also so much more than that.
The race is officially known as the KAP sani2c because KAP, through PG Bison, has been involved with KAP sani2c since its inception in 2004. The lesser-known story is that Farmer Glen, the founder of the event, originally started it to raise funds for one local school and today they raise funds for sixteen local schools situated along the route.
The event itself creates permanent and temporary employment and even upskills members of the community with many members being taught a number of practical skills such as bricklaying, building and tiling. This further enables them to start their own small businesses in the area – an example of a partnership that is part of the KAP regenerative approach to business.
The KAP sani2c business model is highly regarded for the organiser’s innovative community focus. In 2017 it was formalised as the sani2c Community Development Trust and, in partnership with the Do More Foundation, it continues to feed 530 school children daily along the route while involving and providing for communities including schools, charities, rural populations and entrepreneurs.
The truth is nearly all the KAP family of brands are involved in one way or another in KAP sani2c. PG Bison, Restonic, Feltex, Unitrans, Optix and Safripol are all involved in assisting with the race and the race benefits for the communities. Each of these companies does its part to touch people’s lives for the better and to make an impact in a positive way.
