Anele Zondo has remained consistent in releasing hip-hop music and she has managed to maintain her image as one of the most talented women in the South African hip-hop industry.

She recently released a single titled Itching, which features rapper Maglera Doe Boy and we got to find out how this collaboration came about.

Anele says Itching was a minor reminder that hip-hop is her true passion even though she might be venturing into different genres. “If I want to release any genre I can!” she says confidently.

“We did a freestyle only for it to blow up on the internet and people went crazy over it,” Anele says, mentioning how the song was initially a freestyle and was meant to promote her single Johnny but it received a greater reception than expected.

Maglera Doe Boy heard and admired the freestyle and Anele then asked if he would be interested in adding a verse for the freestyle. They went on to establish a relationship and Anele says she has learned much from him.

“It was so exciting to see him in his element,” Anele says.

Anele’s single will be followed by an EP titled Vuka and it will be released on 10 May 2024. The EP title is a direct translation of what the project means for her career, which is an awakening for herself as an artist.

“Even when I started in the [industry], I felt that I had an awakening but I feel like I had to put in a project and kind of get through the full phase of the awakening,” says Anele, explaining how the title of her EP came about.

She adds that the project comprises many Zulu-inspired elements because she comes from KwaZulu-Natal.

“I believe it's an EP with no skips,” she says, reassuring her supporters that it will be pleasant in their ears.

We might be hearing Anele venture into more sounds on this offering. She says hip-hop no longer pays the bills and many artists are migrating to other genres. “As I go on you will never know what genre I might pull up of the bag or want to express myself on,” says the multifaced artist.

“I am a busybody,” Anele adds, mentioning that music is not the only thing keeping her occupied. She shares that she has a brand called Baesics where she has dropped branded water and a swimwear range.

“It’s basically formulating essentials of becoming a bae,” Anele describes the brand.

“This year is all about being the flyest in Africa, this year is all about unleashing my full potentiality, this year is all about giving more to the people who have supported me and the people who are here to support me.”
