  • It's fun to adjust how you style your wig for work, church, a date and a ladies night out.
  • Many women find themselves to be more demure with their styles when going to work and church.
  • If you do your installation at a salon, the first mistake to avoid is arriving late.

Whether you are going to a social event or attending church, there is always a wig style best suitable for the occasion.

Owner and founder of The San Hair Xola Madubedube, and Mary who is a hairstylist from their Cresta branch share some tips on how to style your wig, depending on the occasion and share some common mistakes people make when getting their wigs installed.

Work

For work, Mary states that most clients prefer a "wear and go" wig, which does not require installation. This wig is efficient for work because you can use it every day and you can choose which side you prefer for a line to be opened, contrary to an installation that has to be repeatedly installed and styled.

Xola says, “definitely something that is quiet and neat and decent.” “Something that really represents you and shows you off as a lady that is just well put together prim and proper.” She advices ladies to get a short or long bob wig. It can be eight or 16 inches and it can be black or with a bit of highlights.

Bob wigs installations usually last longer and can last you the entire work week. You can also easily cover them with a bonnet.

Church

Similar to work, women prefer keeping it simple when going to church. They avoid using bright colours and "dramatic styles". The goal is "to install hair not to look like it's a wig," Mary explains. She adds that simplicity is needed when attending church and going to work.

Xola suggests a “neat, tight, low pony because it is clean and not too distracting. “You can really get into worship without worrying about your hair getting in the way,” she stated. So whatever wig that you installed throughout the weekend can simply be tied into a pony and used for church.

Ladies night

For a ladies' night out, you would surely want to stand out and ensure that your wig is flawless. However, Mary advises that you style your wig in a way that matches your outfit and compliments your face. The colour and design of your outfit will determine the way your wig should be styled and if your wig does not coordinate with your outfit, then you probably need to try a different style or a different outfit.

“Theres something that is just super sexy about curls when you going out for a ladies night” “For a ladies night, curls are always a win for me,” says Xola, as she stated that curls are the go to wig style for a fun ladies night out.

Social gatherings

Xola says “something with colour, something loud, something that screams I’ve arrived,” is what she would opt for.

“Many conversations start from how your hair looks,” she further alluded as she advised that ladies should go for a style that speaks to their personality so that people can approach them with an idea of what kind of person they are.

Date

For a date, Mary advises that you go all out and be dramatic.

You surely want to give main character energy. Bouncy curls and layered curls are best suitable for dates, and “you can never go wrong with that,” says Xola.

Four common mistakes clients make when getting their wigs installed

1. Sweating

Mary advises clients to let their installers know if they sweat heavily because sweating damages the installation, making the wig lift. She says the problem is clients are not aware that sweat ruins the installation and they end up blaming the installer for the outcome.

2. Arriving late

An installation takes 45 to 60 minutes, so, make sure that you arrive on time so that you can receive the best installation. You cannot expect your installation to be done within 20 minutes and continuously rush your hairstylist because you have other commitments.

3. Not specifying your preference with edges

Edges are not compulsory and if you do not tell your hairstylist that you would like edges then you will not receive them. Mary highlights that clients tend to realise after the installation has been done that something is missing and that is the only time when they will say they want edges. Unfortunately, it becomes an inconvenience to the installer and, at times, it might be too late to add them.

4. Being rude

It is good to have an enjoyable relationship with your installer because that helps them to become free around you. When you are rude, you become unapproachable and that can result in some errors or receiving the wrong installation.
