  • The film and TV experience has changed with the introduction of streaming.
  • Onscreen entertainment from the '00 and earlier now trigger nostalgia for many.
  • Movies like Sarafina allow us to relive experiences from the past.

When watching a TV show or movie, do you prefer tuning into something new and modern like The Real Housewives of Durban or do you enjoy the 90s and early 2000s sitcoms that star veteran actors and portray unforgettable moments of the past such as SABC 2’s Stokvel

Well, having an interest in older TV shows and movies is completely understandable because it might create a nostalgic effect that makes you relive certain experiences.

Jonathan Spencer, a brand and campaign manager, says, brands reference TV shows and music from the past when they promote their products because it creates a sense of emotional and memorial relatability for the consumer.

“It is for this reason that we have embraced the nostalgia effect through incorporating old-school 90’s, early 2000s MTV and musical references to transport shoppers back in time but with a modern twist,” Jonathan stated.

He adds that after conducting a study, they realised that nostalgic memories create a feeling of hope for the future and a willingness to explore new things and create new experiences.

He says, “A significant portion (72 percent) of participants in a study reported that nostalgic memories motivated them during challenging times and 60 percent said these memories offered guidance when faced with uncertainty.”

South Africa has an amazing catalogue of nostalgic TV shows and movies such as SABC 1’s Emzini Wezinsizwa and the revolutionary Sarafina, which has aired almost every year on Youth Day.
