  • Donald Moatshe has been in the music industry for more than 15 years and he would like to celebrate being a solo artist for such a long time.
  • He has collaborated with some big names such as Tiwa Savage, Kenny Lattimore, Cici and Bucie.
  • Donald intends to collaborate and mentor the youth more.

Having 15 years in the music industry is quite a feat, especially if you have hits like I Deserve and Over the Moon.

This is what Donald Moatshe has achieved as a musician and he shares some light on how he has managed to consistently strive for the best.

In 2009, Donald decided to part ways with a musical group and went on to seek greener pastures as a solo artist. He celebrates 15 years as a solo artist and says he has mastered the art of being a songwriter, producer, label owner and mentor to young artists.

"I'm a versatile artist," Donald says, explaining how his love for music has led him to do house, dance and Afro-pop music. However, there is that one sentiment that he loves to share across genres.

"I write about everything love and relationships and those dynamics between us men and women to remind people how we should relate to each other as men and women," he says, highlighting that love is the common theme of his music.

"I'm inspired by everything and everyone. It's not always my own story. Sometimes it's someone else's story that I see from the outside and that inspires me to write a certain song."

Donald is one of the few South African musicians who have managed to keep a relatively clean slate and not get involved in much industry drama. He says the message of love and positivity that he spreads through his music does not allow him to be caught in some conflict or negative news.

He says, "When I came into this industry there's a certain mandate that I had, certain dreams that I wanted to pursue and make come true. Things like drama and those types of things hinder you from making your dreams come true. So I don't partake."

Donald has had a solid musical catalog for the past years, having gained a large audience and securing major features. Some of the favourite artists that he enjoyed working with are Tiwa Savage, Kenny Lattimore, Cici and Bucie.

"I normally work with artists who I am a fan of," he says, adding that he has multiple collaborations in the works for 2024 and that he has been working with some youngsters in the industry such as Sino Msolo, Sir Trill and Dinky Kunene.

Apart from the music, fashion is another thing Donald's finds joy in. His lavish aesthetic has had him receiving plenty of compliments and style awards. However, the singer says this is something that is natural to him.

"I don't necessarily look at myself as that [stylish guy]. I just love to look good," he says. However, when he makes an appearance in public, he ensures that he stands out and looks presentable. "When I leave my house, I want to feel like "yho! Ja no ngizikapile!" I always want to affect the room in a positive way. Fashion and style is a huge part of that for me."

As much as he enjoys looking good, Donald believes that he is a simple guy and he avoids loud colours and massive accessories because they do not speak to his personality.

"You need to know what your personality is and try to dress according to your personality."

Donald looks forward to celebrating his 15 years as a solo artist in a fun and constructive way. He has begun hosting celebrations across the country and he plans to host more of them with some of the biggest media personalities.

He shares that he would also like to provide masterclasses to art students who would like to use their creativity as a career. "That's a really huge part of what we doing this year, uplifting the young. I just want to uplift and guide and just inspire the young," he concludes.
