Oscar styles that you've got to see

At last night’s Oscars red carpet there was one giant, dominant trend.

There were over 20 different versions of one key look: pale, metallic, embellished, spangly column dresses with small trains.

Most of the big names wore this trend – like Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Garner, Lady Gaga and Kristen Bell; and the best of all was the incomparable Kate Hudson, who wore Versace with a small cape.

The cape came off for her to present her award and still the dress looked sensational.

Aside from the beaded, embellished and sequined pale dresses, there were also plenty of gorgeous, pale column dresses without the shiny detail. Penelope Cruz, Laura Dern and Camila Alves, partner of Matthew McConaughey, all wore simple, beautiful blush shades.

And let’s not forget the pale blue Prada dazzler that Lupita Nyong’o wore. She definitely won this category as well as her spectacular awards category.

There was a little bit of colour on the carpet, starting with the most glorious navy from Sandra Bullock, in Alexander McQueen, and Amy Adams in Gucci. Navy is such an elegant and sophisticated colour for a red carpet, so the Oscars really was the best place to bring it out. Both ladies looked extraordinary.

As usual, black was a popular choice. Charlize Theron went wonderfully big in her Dior gown, but most of the rest of the ladies, like Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway and Olivia Wilde all kept to the key silhouette of the night – sleek column floor sweepers with small trains, with very little fuss.
