Rebellion is the new sophistication: key pieces to wear

accreditation
Asanda Sizani has carved an inimitable name for herself in South African fashion. Her diverse experience spans across print, advertising and television. As a style journalist, stylist and creative consultant, Sizani has worked for some of the largest fashion magazines and retailers in the country.

She has held the position of Fashion Editor at ELLE and previously, Drum magazine. She has written regular columns for Grazia, Juice and recently, an introduction to the Africa chapter in a coffee table book, Global Style Tribes. Sizani is a regular fashion collaborator for Woolworths' WMag and a sought after style consultant. She is a member of the Berlin UP Fashion Committee which creates trade and networking opportunities for African designers in Germany.

We've seen women in sweet, candy-floss pastels and innocent summer dresses. She wore dainty kitten heels with a pretty bow. She was doll-like with flushed, pink cheeks and a floral headband adorned her perfect hair. She was such a lady. We then saw her portrayed as a provocative femme fatale wearing a peek-a-boo blouse and racy black pvc - an object of men's desire. But this time, we see strong women resurface, and they are in formation.

Beyonce’s anthem featured women who looked purposeful and on a mission. Her Black Panther-inspired squad looks fearless, with blackened lips and proud afros. Their rebellion is their sophistication. The formation trend has picked up, charged like-minded women to join the movement. The mood is resolute, the palette is black, the key piece is the turtleneck, and the must-have accessory is a beret. There are multiple sides to a woman, and the power of fashion is that, we can use it as a powerful statement to say something important. I expect to see more of this similar politically charged styling, with women who are unafraid to express themselves.

Sometimes, fashion is a mirror reflecting the daily battles we face. With the heavy issues we are facing the world over, ‘Formation’ came at just the right time.

I'm inspired by the quote, "Fashion is armour which women use to fight everyday battles". I am slicking on my dark lipstick, lacing up my military boots and marching up to face any challenge head-on.
