Naya Rivera’s body has been found in Lake Piru, California.

The 33-year-old actress went missing on 8 July after she rented a pontoon boat with her four-year-old son and officials have now revealed that she probably mustered just enough strength to save her little boy, Josey Hollis, CNN reported.

This follows a six-day search for Naya’s body after she went for a swim in the lake with Josey who was found several hours later asleep in the rented boat, wearing a life vest while his mother’s was still onboard.

According to Metro, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub revealed in a press conference regarding Naya’s disappearance and passing that it’s likely she saved her son before she died.

“We believe it was mid-afternoon when she disappeared. It would be speculation to say at this point [how her son got on the boat but not her]. There are a lot of currents on the lake that appear particularly in the afternoon,” Sheriff Ayub said.

“The idea perhaps being that the boat started drifting, it was unanchored, and that she mustered enough energy to get her son back into the boat, but not enough to save herself.”

This announcement comes after the sheriff’s office said they were “confident” the body they found floating in the northeast area of the lake where the water is 10 to 18m deep was that of Naya, Elle reported.

“. . . There’s heavy brush and trees on the lake bed there,” Sheriff Ayub added during the public briefing.

While Naya was presumed dead after she went missing on Wednesday, authorities further revealed that there were no signs of foul play or that Naya had taken her own life. However, her body will still undergo an autopsy.

“This was simply a tragic accidental drowning death,” Sheriff Ayub added.

Naya is survived by her son, who’s said to be “in good health” and is with her family, her sister, Nickayla, her brother, Mychal, and her parents, George and Yolanda, Cosmopolitan reported.
