Ooh, is that the sound of wedding bells we hear? Oh, no, it’s just the sound of tongues wagging and Twitter tweeting, in vain.

As much as we want our favourite celebs to make our shipping dreams come true, they often let us down, despite our hopes, prayers and hashtags.

Maps Maponyane and Boity Thulo’s cute online flirting had fans convinced that Cupid was pulling strings behind-the scenes, and Twitter quickly started #BoityEngagedByMaps.

They’re just good friends, they insisted, but who wants to believe that?

Uh, they do, it seems, despite the online matchmakers’ best attempts to send them down the aisle.

Khanyi Mbau

After she and her boyfriend, Tebogo Lerole, had reportedly separated, Khanyi posted pics of herself casually wearing a very big, very shiny and very engagement-like rock on her finger.

Fans wasted no time congratulating her, but she’s insisted she doesn’t have any knot-tying in her near future.

Ayanda Thabethe

She keeps her personal life behind closed doors since her split with musician Zulu Mkhathini, so any sighting of Ayanda with a man was bound to get the rumour mill spinning.

Unsuprisingly, when she was spotted on a trip with businessman Papi Rapolai – believed to be an ex of hers – word quickly spread that she was engaged.

Turns out, she wasn’t.

“I am definitely not engaged, everyone calm down. Thank you. Have a beautiful weekend,” she tweeted.

Khloe Kardashian

The reality star sparked engagement rumours after she was spotted wearing a very impressive ring at her birthday bash in June, but she insisted that she and her ex, basketball star Tristan Thompson, will not be exchanging vows but rather focusing on co-parenting.
