It was love at first sight when Paola Agnelli and Michele D'Alpaos finally locked eyes despite being neighbours for most of their lives.
The couple from Verona who’ve been dubbed “Italy’s modern-day Romeo and Juliet” fell in love from their balconies during lockdown, and now they plan on getting married, Metro reports.
Paola (40) says she first saw Michele (38) on a balcony after a community concert was arranged during a 10-week government lockdown in March.
The lawyer says it was love at first sight as she was helping her sister Lisa, who was playing at the community concert.
“The first time I saw Michele it was love first sight and for him as well – our eyes just met each other. The atmosphere was so romantic,” she told Femail.
Shortly after the concert Michele found Paola on Instagram and they chatted until the early hours of the morning almost every night. “‘We realised we shared the same values and that those would be a solid base for a relationship – we are both determined people but also kind and sensitive,” she said. Their budding romance went viral on social media after Michele, an IT worker, painted Paola’s name on an old sheet and tied it to the top floor of his building for everyone to see.They weren’t able to meet due to the Covid-19 restrictions so their relationship was fuelled by late-night texts, phone calls and longing gazes from their balconies, drawing comparisons to the lovers in the Shakespeare tragedy set in Verona. After two months of talking over the phone they finally met in a park in May.
