Talk about a case of mistaken identity! In what must be a first for Prince Harry (36), he was mistaken for a salesperson at a Christmas tree pop-up shop.

He and Meghan (39) were out shopping in their new hometown of Santa Barbara, California, when an excited youngster approached the duke and asked for help.

The mix-up happened while the couple were shopping for a tree at Big Wave Dave’s Christmas Trees & Pumpkin Patch.

According to salesman James Almaguer, the couple had arranged to have the lot cleared but one family was still there when they arrived.

“Their stoked little son ran through the trees up to Harry and asked if he worked here, not knowing who he was,” he says.

He says the Sussexes were very accommodating. “Meghan sounds very kind and Harry sounded and acted like a chill lad, honestly. I’m really glad they liked our trees. We got the best we could get.”

He says the couple did end up buying a tree for what will be their first Christmas at their Montecito mansion.

It will be their second Christmas away from the royal family in the UK – last year they spent the festive season with their 18-month-old son, Archie, and Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, in Canada.

It’s highly likely Doria, who lives in nearby Los Angeles, will join them again this year.

Meanwhile, Harry has also launched a lawsuit against UK media group Associated Newspapers, the same group his wife is suing.

In separate legal action to his wife, his claim is said to a relate to a story the Mail on Sunday ran in October which alleged that he failed to maintain contact with the Royal Marines after he formally quit the royal family in March.

He gave up his honorary military titles after stepping down as a senior royal.

Meghan’s trial, which had been scheduled to start in January 2021 in the high court in London, will now only be heard in September after the duchess successfully applied for an adjournment based on a “confidential matter”.

She is suing the Mail on Sunday for breach of privacy after they published part of a confidential letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle, shortly after her 2018 wedding.
