It’s back to work for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who kicked off their 2021 engagements by gate-crashing a virtual poetry meeting.
The couple were surprise guests during a virtual reading organised by poetry group Get Lit in honour of Black History Month.
In a screenshot shared by the group on Instagram, Harry and Meghan are seen beaming as they introduce themselves to the aspiring poets, who are aged between 13 and 19. Many of the young people appear open-mouthed at the appearance of the famous couple, who joined the call from their Santa Barbara mansion.
“Soooo Prince Harry and Meghan dropped into my poetry class on Saturday and kicked it with the Get Lit Players for a multitude of minutes,” group leader Mason Granger wrote on Instagram.
“It was pretty surreal. My kids shared poems, they asked questions, the kids answered and asked questions back, they responded authentically (they actually read and learned the kids bios I’d sent earlier).
“My favourite part of it all was Meghan echoing so many sentiments we’ve talked about in class, about this particular moment in time/history to be a young person and the ripple effect of a single voice.”
Meghan (39) also shared some of her favourite lines with the class while Harry (36) said he had a keen interest in poetry.
Get Lit founder Diane Luby Lane added the couple also “discussed deep things like racism and the importance of listening to one another”.
On a lighter note, they took song suggestions for their “dinner playlist” when one of the students recommended a Joni Mitchell song after Meghan mentioned the Canadian folk singer.
The duchess has long been a fan of Joni, previously revealing that her song California had become something of an anthem in her life and she’d always listen to it whenever she felt homesick.
The Get Lit group couldn’t help but rave about their famous visitors on their Instagram page afterwards. “Guess who surprised our poetry class this weekend? It was the best weekend EVER! Prince Harry and Meghan were magic and kind and interested in poetry!”
Meanwhile, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Meghan has been approached with many “lucrative offers from respectable publishing houses” to write a book.
“Meghan has some very serious book deals on the table. They are all up for consideration,” she says.
