How did you come up with the idea?

We received requests from people to borrow our wigs for a night or two for magazine shoots, trendy events or shows, because it worked with a certain look they were going for.

We did more research, and realised it could be a solution for those who’d like wigs for short-term periods only. So we bought different kinds of wigs that we thought consumers would take a liking to. That was the birth of the idea and we formalised it as a business, now called HairMeOut.

How has the reception been?

It’s been a 50/50 toss up. Some have been skeptical. Others saw this as a great opportunity to cater to people who’d attend special occasions like weddings, graduations, photo and video shoots and A-class events, and only needed the hair for the event or one day.

How did you fund the business?

The business was self-funded and our start-up capital was roughly 25K.

Please tell us how the process of hiring out a wig with HMO works?

There are two parts to the business, rentals and sales.

Sales:

1. You place an order

2. We share a quote

3. You accept and pay a deposit or make full payment

4. We deliver within 3 - 5 working days.

Rentals

1. A client sends a request to HMO or fills out one of our booking forms on our Instagram bio (@hairmeoutza)

2. We exchange a quotation along with an agreement form

3. The client agrees, makes payment and sends back a signed agreement form

4. HMO delivers and conducts inspection with the client.

5. Upon return of the hair, the wig is fully inspected by a HMO representative and the client. If all is in order, the deposit is paid back to the client

The price range of hiring a wig is from R100-R300, depending on the number of days.

How do you maintain the hygiene of the wigs?

Hygiene is our number one priority and key performance indicator. Therefore when we deliver any HMO piece to a client, we, and the client, do a full inspection, to ensure that the hair’s in good condition. We also provide each client with a wig sock and insist they put it on prior to wearing the wig. This is included in the rental fee. We encourage clients not to wash or treat the hair before they return it, as we have hair gurus within the industry who do a perfect and professional job. We treat and wash our wigs after every rental.

What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced?

So far, it’s mainly not having enough wigs for every client that approaches us. We’re working on duplicating styles and building our rental wig collection to represent a more diverse and dynamic range.
