Despite the fact that festival organisers may have become a little rusty after a two-year hiatus, with a few basic aspects of the concert being bungled, such as access and hospitality, the 24th Tribute to SA Music Heroes Concert this past Saturday was a huge success as far performances were concerned.

The stage, placed right before two giant mountains at Moretele Park in Mamelodi, Pretoria, was big enough for everyone to see and enjoy music by their favourite musicians.

Legendary musician Ringo Madlingozi brought fire to the stage with his electrifying performance. He delivered beloved classics including Ndiyagodola, Sondela, Into Yami and Nkqo Nkqo, and the audience was left chanting “we want more!” at the end of his set.

People like me, who were born in the 1990s and who didn’t grow up in homes that were obsessed with jazz, were surprised at how much they knew most of the songs of the iconic musicians who graced the stage, but they did not know the names or faces of those musicians. I was proud to know songs by Don Laka and Bhudazaa Mapefane, who were both amazing acts. Laka gave an all-instrumental performance from beginning till the end.

It would be an injustice to not mention the spectacular set by Mango Groove, whose performance was one for the books.

The evergreen duo Mafikizolo also deserves to be celebrated more, because Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Mafu are as good on stage today as they were two decades ago. Plus they still look young, fresh and are always fashionable.

I love their ability to reinvent themselves and move with the times, which gives them the advantage to attract new fans while retaining their original fan base. They even took us to church with a few gospel songs.

Promoters and organisers in and outside the country probably sat down and said to each other “your show is not a show if your line-up doesn't include Makhadzi [Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona]” because the amazing singer has been, deservedly so, securing all the bags. She gave a showstopper performance on the night, this after coming straight from the Basadi In Music Awards in Midrand, where she won the artist of the year award.

The Moretele Park tribute concert sure knows how to bring in the best of our local music, even the legendary gospel group Amadodana Ase Wesile made a cameo appearance, to the delight of everyone in attendance.

And as the event drew to a close with promises to “see you next year; same time, same place”, one only hoped for better hospitality at the next instalment.
