To make the old dark kitchen feel lighter and more spacious, the couple removed the ceiling – only to discover another ceiling above  it. Both were taken out to reveal  the rafters and a new pitched ceiling with insulation was installed. The rafters had to be rearranged to accommodate the false chimney above the extractor and to make a strong structural connection to the rest of the house. “We knew that this was the home we wanted to get married in,” recall Ricardo and Chérie Liut of the first time they visited this 1920s house. “And we were just dating at the time, we weren’t even engaged.”

The house wasn’t in great shape, it was getting dark and the tenants weren’t keen for them to walk through it.
