At the end of 2020, I tackled a bathroom renovation. Inevitably, one thing led to another, and before long it had evolved into a major operation of chopping out floors, installing new doors (the old wooden frames were rotten) and new plumbing, as the house is more than 100 years old and the many patch jobs over the years were starting to cause all sorts of problems.
Back then, it was my dream to lay klompie bricks in a herringbone pattern – outside and inside. “Pavers in your house?” asked my builder indignantly. But I went ahead and ordered the klompies, which were lifted over the wall by crane in a dramatic fashion, with the entire neighbourhood looking on.
The street is steep and the truck had to plant supports like grasshopper legs on the tar road.
