Liesl Granger of Kempton Park writes: It looks like load-shedding is going to be with us for quite a while, so I want to replace my electric hob with a gas one. What are the regulations regarding where gas cylinders must be located – indoors or outside? Must I use a registered installer and what else do I need to know about kitchen cabinets and the fittings?

Wydus Brits of Gasline in Cape Town replies: Gas is indeed becoming a necessity these days – and any gas installation must be done by a qualified and certified LP gas installer. There are several reasons for this: the installation must meet all the specifications of the SABS standard for gas installations (SANS 10087-1:2013) and the installer must provide you with a Certificate of Compliance (COC), certifying that your installation is safe for use. You are not permitted to store more than 19kg of LP gas inside your house; for a flat or apartment the maximum is 9kg.
