Winter is here.

Well, at least it feels as though it is here - not because Game of Thrones has everyone in a frenzy, but because it feels as though South Africa has somehow forgotten that autumn comes next after summer, and suddenly it's dark by 17:30.

Anyway, I guess that's an excuse to finally pull out those winter showstoppers you've been patiently waiting to debut all throughout summer.

This autumn/winter season comes with plenty trends for us to swathe ourselves in - from floor-sweeping coats to luxurious looking faux fur, it's all about warmth that's taken a page out of the animal planet's book, but consciously so.

While animals hibernate at the beginning of the winter season in search of warmth, we borrow inspiration from their coats and incorporate them into various clothing items. And in 2019, we're taking flight with details from the avian family.

The feather trend is set to be a major one this season, appearing on coat sleeves, trouser and skirt hems, shoes, and earrings. We have Miuccia Prada and Marc Jacobs' fun approach to couture to thank for the inspiration.

At SA Fashion Week, Gert-Johan Coetzee gave us a collection with standout full feather gowns, including this incredible one worn by Nomzamo Mbatha at last week's E! Africa 15-year celebration.

Marianne Fassler's AFI Fashion Week show was also a remarkable exhibition of feathered #AfricanCouture from her UNTAMED collection.

But when you're not on the runway or the red carpet, this is how you can wear feathers to add a dramatic flair to your OOTD:
