Her fiancé had spent two years paying off her glittering wedding ring so imagine this bride's heartbreak when she discovered it was a fake.
She discovered they’d been ripped off when she bragged to a friend about the pricy piece of jewellery which she’d thought was worth £7,500 (R167 000). The friend took one look at the "diamond and platinum" ring and realised it was a fake.
Her friend, who revealed the scam on Facebook, had to break the news to her pal that the ring was probably worth a mere £10 (R220,78). The couple had been scammed by a jeweller who knowingly sold them a sample of the ring they'd initially picked out and accepted instalments for two years.
The friend couldn’t believe what they’d paid for it. "My eyes bulged out when she told me the price,” she wrote.
"The platinum [was] worn down, buffed with thousands of tiny scratches. That's when I turned the ring over to see the benchmarks on the ring - I see a big CZ and 925 in the ring, " she told The Sun.
The bride refused to believe it at first but then she decided to do some research. In fact a ring made of CZ and 925 consists of sterling silver and cubic zirconia, not diamonds and platinum as she’d been led to believe.
The bride broke the news to her fiancé and they confronted the jeweller.
The friend wrote: "Turns out, [the jeweller] sold them the dummy demo that's worth maybe £10, and took the payments for the £7.5k ring for two years. Mind you, she'd had the ring serviced during that time. So they knew what was up and said nothing to them."
The ring has now been replaced for free and a number of payments returned to the unhappy couple.
