Even famous folk have people they fangirl over, as the Sussexes recently proved.

In a recent virtual meeting with leaders of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust – of which the duke and duchess are president and vice-president – to discuss the role of social media, the couple let slip they are huge fans of Brené Brown, a respected American self-help guru.

“We absolutely adore her,” they chimed in their first joint appearance from their new home in Santa Barbara while chatting to Hunter Johnson of The Man Cave, a mental health and emotional intelligence charity for young men.

They said this after Hunter quoted one of Brené’s key philosophies that “vulnerability brings connection and connection is why we are here. It brings meaning and purpose to our lives.”

The Sussexes also voiced their support for Tristan Hunter – the Texan co-founder of the Centre for Humane Technology – after Johnson mentioned him too.

“I love the fact that you are bringing up Brené Brown and Tristan Hunter – two people that we absolutely adore and that we know as well,” Harry gushed.

“Five years ago, six years ago, talking about your mental health was a sign of weakness, just as much as showing vulnerability was. If we’re all able to show our vulnerability that doesn’t mean you are weak, if anything I believe that shows mostly your strength.”

Meghan added that increasingly people are “going online more than ever before to feel community” especially in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic where our “mental and emotional wellbeing is perhaps more fragile than ever before.”

Brené, who counts the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow and Melinda Gates amongst her fans, works in the field of “courage, shame, vulnerability and empathy”.

She’s written many best-selling motivational books and her Ted talk, the Power of Vulnerability, has been viewed almost 50 million times.

It seems the couple have quite a few influential people they look up.

Meghan recently sat down with well-known veteran activist Gloria Steinem to discuss the importance of voting in light of the upcoming US election and women’s rights.

The mom-of-one appeared overwhelmed with excitement as she sat with the 86-year-old during their “backyard chat” which was filmed for Makers Women, a women’s empowerment platform.

In a short teaser clip that was posted on social media on Tuesday afternoon, viewers got a glimpse at Meghan and Gloria together sitting in wooden deck chairs in a lush yard.
