5 supernatural series you MUST read

accreditation
The Jane True Series by Nicole Peeler
Books in series so far: Tempest Rising, Tracking the Tempest, Tempest's Legacy (available from December 2010 onwards)
Supernatural/ Mythological focus: Selkies (I know - how refreshing), Vampires and a combination of various mythical creatures set in what is sure to be a fun, supernatural-filled world.
What it's about:  Meet Jane True. Hated by the entire village of Rockabill, in Maine, she's always felt like an outcast. So when she discovers a dead body during one of her nightly swimming expeditions, everything she thought she knew about herself changes and startling revelations about her heritage is quickly revealed.

Jane's not human, she's half-selkie (For those who don't know, selkies are seal shapeshifters). The daughter of a full-blooded selkie (her mother, who she hasn't seen since she was 6), Jane quickly becomes entrenched in a world filled with supernatural creatures who are both terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

Of course, life wouldn't be interesting if there wasn't a drop-dead gorgeous vampire love interest, named Ryu, thrown into the mix.

No word has been mentioned as to whether or not there'll be a fourth book in this series, but this Urban fantasy meets Sookie Stackhouse meets chick-lit with bite sounds like the perfect kind of read for lovers of paranormal romance.

The Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane
Books in series: Unholy GhostsUnholy Magic, City of Ghosts (City of Ghosts expected to be available from August onwards)
Supernatural focus: Ghosts, Demons, Magic, Witches
What it's about:  Times have changed. The dead have risen and are constantly attacking the living. A powerful group, known as The Church of Real Truth have since been in charge and have sworn to compensate the citizens being harassed by the living dead. Of course, there is a little problem with many a person making false claims of haunting in order to try and gain profit.

Enter Chess Putnam.  A fully-fledged witch and kick-ass ghost hunter to boot, she's got a knack for nailing liars and deporting the dead. Hired by the Church, there's one little problem they aren't aware of: Chess has a drug problem that's landed her in huge trouble. Between owing a ruthless drug lord a crap load of money, and having to take on a nasty task (involving human sacrifice, demonic creatures and black magic) in order to pay or her debt, Chess has her hands full.

Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent
Books in series: My soul to lose (Prequel novella), My Soul to Take, My Soul to Save, My Soul to Keep
Supernatural focus: Bean sidhe (or, Banshee if you will)
What it's about: Kaylee just wants to live a normal life, but it's hard to do whenever you can sense someone near you about to die, and when you do, you end up screaming bloody murder. No really, you do.

Thankfully, Nash, the hot guy in the school, seems to understands Kaylee's need to scream more than she does. Not only that, but he understands exactly what she is. My soul to take is the first in a series of young adult urban fantasy books which is narrated by Kaylee Cavanaugh - who just so happens to be a banshee.

Between trying to normal life with a hidden world filled with grim reapers, demons and every other mythical monster imaginable, Kaylee's life is about to get a whole lot weirder than she'd ever imagine.

Oh, top tip for you: You can download My Soul to Lose (the novella) free from the author's official website, here.

The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning
Books in series: Darkfever, Bloodfever, Faefever, Dreamfever, Shadowfever
Supernatural focus: Faeries / Fairies
What it's about: MacKayla Lane is happy. She lives a great life, has fabulous friends and a job that pays the bills.

Then her sister is killed, leaving nothing but a puzzling message on her Kayla's phone - leading her to Ireland in search of answers. It's here where her quests leads her into the realm of the fae - and where the masks of both good and evil are obscured beneath a seductive veneer. For Kayla is more than she could have ever imagined - she's a sidhe (sidhe relating to fairies and pronounced as "she") seer .

As she struggles to survive and at the same time delve into the mystery of her sister's death, she quickly becomes entangled in the lives of 2 men - Jericho, the dark, mysterious man with no past and Vlane - an alpha Fae who, uh hum, makes sex nothing short of a drug addiction to human women.

Between battling lust, trying to discover who her sister's murder is and trying to find an elusive powerful Dark Book, our little MacKayla certainly has her hands full.

The Kitty Norville Series by Carrie Vaughn
Books in series: Kitty and The Midnight Hour, Kitty Goes to Washington, Kitty Takes a Holiday, Kitty and the Silver Bullet, Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand, Kitty Raises Hell, Kitty's House of Horrors, Kitty Goes to War
Supernatural focus:  Werewolves
What it's about: Kitty is a werewolf. Yes, her name is rather ironic, isn't it? Nonetheless, feline-like name or not, she's a fanged and furry canine. Of course, she's still in the closet, but who really cares when she works as a midnight-shift DJ for a Denver radio station - which surprisingly enough - is a huge hit.

Still, even though her late-night advice show for the human and supernatural community alike is a raging success, not everyone likes her show - and soon, with a raging homicidal vampire family after her and a very sexy werewolf-hunter thrown into the mix, it would seem as if Kitty has um, bitten off far more than she can chew - and needs more advice than the dose that she usually dishes out.

The first in a book series of 8 (so far), The Kitty Norville series is quite popular amongst werewolf fiction fantatics. Kitty and The Midnight Hour is the first in the series, followed by the abovementioned list in order of release date.

There are obviously a whole range of other fabulous book series out there (Wicked Lovely, Blue Bloods, Sookie Stackhouse and The Vampire Diaries to mention but a few) but not enough space to list them all. We will however feature more fabulous supernatural series in the weeks to come. In the meantime...
